For the Peruvian writer, the moment of crisis came when his father, who violently resisted his passion for literature, he decided to entrust to an institute run by the military, known for its hardness: the College Leoncio Prado, in Lima. Vargas Llosa recounts: "For me it was like discovering hell, but it was there that I began to write. I had to cultivate my passion in secret, but it was for me as an outlet that I had to revolt against the Leoncio Prado. In this novel, which is to be a metaphor for today's violence, the author returns to the painful experience in college.
